Speak -Writing
Author Lia Hills

Are you a creative writer or an avid reader? Frinj Sunday offers two relaxed and thoughtful workshop sessions and an author’s Q&A where we’ll share stories, spark conversations, and reflect on the deep connections we have to place, memory, and each other.
In this place-based writing workshop, Lia Hills, acclaimed author of The Desert Knows Her Name - a novel researched and set in the Wimmera - will share the technique of speak-writing she used to create the first draft of her novel. Together, we’ll experiment with using live storytelling to create new pieces of writing, responding to the land and more-than-human species as prompts. This will be an engaging and safe space to experiment with language and practice deep listening. Please bring either a smart phone (we’ll be using its dictation software) or writing materials.
What to Expect:
30 minutes: Lia will share speak-writing techniques, including a reading from her novel.
40 minutes: Guided speak-writing session in the parkland.
20 minutes: A chance to reflect, share insights, and gently close the session.
Location: The session will begin at the NC2 and continue outdoors on the Verj parkland.
Duration 1.5hrs
The 'Gathering Stories' workshops are supported by the Australian Research Council funded project ‘Understanding Place-based Repair in Climate Affected Communities’.
